STUDIES / IN MASCULINITY

PACT ZOLLVEREIN RESIDENCY

ESSEN, GERMANY 2015

Created by Jermaine Spivey & Spenser Theberge

Performance installation for 2 performers, 2 wireless microphones, a sound system and piano, 100 chairs & enough painter's plastic to cover the space.

'Studies in Masculinity' was the result of a residency at PACT Zollverein with Jermaine Spivey in December 2015. Audience members were asked to enter the room with viewing devices (either goggles with a pin hole, hand held mirrors, or toilet paper rolls) and to only view the performance through these devices. The purpose was an experiment in how to control the amount of information an audience receives, and to challenge the audience to participate in the gathering of their information in a new way.  Framing content made literal and physical.

Duration: 3 hours, audience can come and go as they please.
